In the immediate aftermath of a catastrophe, it is natural to associate an area with the tragedy and suffering it has recently experienced. We forget the life that once was. In the aftermath of the devastating floods of September 2023, LHH explores the beautiful city of Derna, nicknamed the ‘City of Poets’, with its notable architecture, historical richness and rich family life, in this restorative exercise, built with photo contributions from our readers and citizens of Derna.
LIbya’s forgotten genocide

During the period from 1929-1934, thousands of Libyans died at the hands of their Italian colonisers. Men, women and children were taken from their homes by force and interned in one of the 16 desert concentration camps of the fascist Italian regime. Here is their story and the tale of the Libyan resistance led by the indomitable Omar Al Mukhtar a.k.a. ‘The Desert Lion’.
